After two weeks of climate talks, the highly anticipated United Nation Climate Change Conference (COP21) climaxed with 195 nations declaring their support for a final agreement to combat climate change. This was a significant world event representing nations coming together for the first time with a single mindset and united goal to address what is arguably the most important issue facing us in the 21st Century.
Heralding the historic agreement, President Barack Obama said it provides the “best chance we have to save the one planet we have” with UK Prime Minister David Cameron saying the deal represents “a huge step forward in securing the future of the planet”.
The agreement will fully come into effect in 2020 with the overarching aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a level that will limit the global average temperature to a rise “well below” 2C (3.6F) compared to pre-industrial levels – a level of warming deemed to be the point when dangerous climate change could threaten life on Earth.
Other legally binding targets within the agreement include the regular review and submission of emission reduction targets and a $100bn fund from developed economies to help emerging and developing nations decarbonise their energy mix. This will see a global shift from the burning of fossil fuels to adopting clean energy sources, such as renewables, to power countries, with each nation responsible for setting their own Intended National Determined Contributions (INDCs) in terms of emissions levels.
As a global renewable energy solutions provider, with over 25 years’ experience in design, engineering, construction and maintenance of wind, solar and hybrid renewable energy projects, Vergnet welcomes the signing of this historic agreement and the united goal to work towards a sustainable future with renewable energy at its core.
Vergnet is highly experienced in delivering solutions for diverse environments and extreme climates, as well as isolated sites including islands and off-grid locations across the globe.
