Wind and Solar Solutions Playing Increasing Role in Reducing Energy Costs for Mining Industry

Vergnet will be attending the Renewables and Mining Summit and Exhibition in Santiago, Chile from 6-7th May 2015.

Vergnet provides innovation, reliable and affordable solutions in the area of wind, solar PV, hybrid solutions and customised solar applications and has a proven track record in delivering high performance, reliable and affordable renewable solutions for the mining industry.

Vergnet mining projects completed in recent years include successful wind energy schemes for a zinc mine El Toqui, Chile, South America with Seawind and a National Mining and Industrial Company (SNIM) iron mine in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, West Africa.

Marc Rivard, Sales Director, Vergnet said: “We are delighted to be exhibiting at the Renewable and Mining Summit in Santiago this year. With energy generally accounting for 20-40% of operating costs, reducing electricity expenditure is a now a major operational and strategic goal for the mining industry with renewables playing an increasingly significant role.”

“Vergnet provides clean energy to power mines in Chile, and other global locations which are often isolated from the national electricity grids. Our wind and solar technology is perfectly adapted for remote regions and are easy to transport, install and maintain. We provide scalable renewable energy solutions from small or medium mining operations, to larger developments, allowing us to deliver the right solution for each mine.”

Mining case studies that Vergnet will be profiling at the exhibition include:

Zinc mine El Toqui, Chile, South America: Vergnet’s first wind farm in South America and comprising 6 GEV MP wind turbines, the clean renewable energy produced at El Toqui powers a zinc mine. Like many mining locations, it is isolated from the national electricity grid and is reliant on Vergnet wind technology to help control energy costs. Vergnet GEV MP turbines have been in operation at El Toqui since 2010.

SNIM Iron Mine, Nouadhibou, Mauritania, West Africa: working with SNIM, Africa’s second-largest producer of iron ore, Vergnet developed the Nouadhibou wind farm consisting of 16 GEV MP wind turbines. Commissioned in 2011, the wind farm is connected to SNIM’s thermal power plant and automatically adapts to grid and load configurations with annual fuel savings of 4,800 tons.

Vergnet will also be showcasing its HYBRID WIZARD™ technology at the event. The patented hybrid solution is the first to maximize renewable energy penetration, in the form of wind or photovoltaic solar, for existing diesel systems in real time. A software-based solution, Hybrid Wizard guarantees cheaper electricity and security of supply for remote mining locations. Mining operators benefit from less fuel consumption, a lower cost per kWh and short payback time.

The 4th Renewables and Mining Summit & Exhibition will showcase the latest renewables-mining projects from Chile and brings together global renewable energy solutions providers like Vergnet with project finance experts to discuss solutions that directly address the energy challenges affecting the competitiveness and growth of the sector. The Honorable Máximo Pacheco Matte, Energy Minister of Chile, is keynote speaker at the event taking place at the Marriott Hotel in Santiago.
