Vergnet is delighted to announce the official inauguration of the Pohnlangas Solar Project in Pohnpei. The landmark event took place on Saturday 14th May 2016 at the new site, located in Madolenihmw municipality in Pohnpei, which is the largest and most populous island in the Federate State of Micronesia (FSM).

Following a traditional ceremony, guests were welcomed to the official event by High Commissioner of Madolenihmw, Mr. Petrick Ringlen Meninkeder, The Honorable Marcelo Peterson, Pohnpei State Governor, His Excellency Peter M. Christian, President of the Federate State of Micronesia and His Majesty Isipahu, Nahnmwarki of Madolenihmw also participating in the inauguration.

Istvan Ponsot, Vergnet’s Head of Business Development for the Pacific Region attended the ceremony and spoke to attendees about Vergnet’s role in delivering renewable solar solutions for the island. Mr. Trevayne Esiel, Chairman, from the Pohnpei Utilities Corporation Board was also in attendance at the ceremony to give an overview of the project.

In delivering the solar project for Pohnpei, Vergnet comprised the design, engineering, procurement, manufacture, construction, permitting, completion, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance capacity building program. Vergnet also managed the start-up of the plant with a total installed solar photovoltaic power capacity of 600 kWp.

The objective of the project was to introduce diversity of energy sources as well as to provide additional energy sources to facilitate the country’s growth. Masdar was appointed to execute the project on behalf of the government of the United Arab Emirates and the government of the Federate State of Micronesia, which is represented by Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC). The Project was funded through the UAE Pacific Partnership Fund.

Vergnet’s track record spans 25 years and includes successful renewable energy installations with solar solutions such as the Tarawa solar hybrid farm in the Republic of Kiribati, Central Pacific Island and the Kiffa hybrid power plant in Mauritania, West Africa.
